Cruise industry undertakes operational safety review

In response to the Costa Concordia incident, a cruise industry operational safety review was announced by Cruise Lines International Association. CLIA said the review will include a ‘comprehensive assessment of the critical human factors and operational aspects of maritime safety.’

The association added that as best practices are identified, they will be shared among CLIA members and any appropriate recommendations will be communicated to the International Maritime Organization. Recommendations will be made on an ongoing basis.

Components include an internal review by CLIA members of their own operational safety practices and procedures concerning navigation, evacuation, emergency training and related practices and procedures.

Consultation with independent external experts will also be part of the review.

Plus, the industry will identify and share best practices and policies, and make possible recommendations to IMO for substantive regulatory changes to further improve operational safety.

CLIA also pledged to collaborate with IMO, governments and regulatory bodies to implement any necessary regulatory changes.

The association said it is committed to understanding the factors that contributed to the Costa Concordia incident and is proactively responding to all maritime safety issues. It added that the operational safety review will allow the industry to do so in a ‘meaningful and expedited manner.’
