The UK-based consulting firm has been widely cited on its cruise industry safety statistics in the wake of the Costa Concordia accident. G.P. Wild found that in the five-year period from 2005-2010, when 98.2m people cruised, there were 16 deaths associated with a marine incident.
Principal Peter Wild called that ‘an excellent safety record,’ with average fatalities at 0.16 per 1m passengers, compared to 0.3 per 1m for the airline industry.
After collecting and analysing cruise safety information as part of its annual ‘Cruise Industry Statistical Review’ for more than a decade, G.P. Wild has now examined the issue in more detail to produce a comprehensive report covering all casualties by type, vessel and nature of the incident.
‘The figures in this new report are believed to be the most comprehensive that are available,’ Wild told Seatrade Insider. ‘The main conclusion from the analysis is that over the last 10 years travelling on a cruise ship has been exceptionally safe.’
